The history of Charleston dates back to the 18th century when Col. Clendenin built the first permanent settlement, Fort Lee in the year 1773. The city got its name from Col. Clendenin's father, Charles. It was originally called Charles Town and later changed to Charleston in order to avoid confusion with another town in eastern West Virginia by the same name, Charles Town.
The early economy of the city was mainly controlled by the salt industry. The first salt well was drilled in the year 1806 and by 1808 almost 1,250 pounds of salt per day was being produced. The country’s first trust, Kanawha Salt Company, started its operations in 1818. Charleston has Kanawha Salines now known as Malden, which today is the largest salt producer in the world. Today the city’s economic growth is attributed to a wide range of industries including natural resources like natural gas and coal. Other industries that play a significant role in the development of Charleston include chemical, gas, steel and timber. These industries have also influenced Charleston WV real estate over the years and continue to forge the current economic terrain.
Charleston saw rapid development following World War II. One of the first developments that the city witnessed was the Yeager Airport, named after General Chuck Yeager. It was originally called Kanawha Airport. It was considered one of the most extraordinary engineering endeavors of its time.
